Alpha 1 Team, often referred to as simply Alpha Team, is the most prestigious, famous, and skilled team of Heroes in Hero Factory. It existed in two iterations: the first running from the 1950s to the 1960s, and the second beginning in the mid 1980s and continuing to the present day.

History[]

The Original[]

For the first sixty years of Hero Factory’s existence, most Heroes remained stationed in a single system their entire lives and were not well-known outside the system in which they were stationed. In the early 1950s, Mr. Makuro wanted to assemble a team that would not only serve as the public face of Hero Factory, but also be suited for going on the most difficult and dangerous missions across the galaxy. He picked “the Fabulous” Thelonius Fox, then stationed on Almaak V, to be the team leader. Rising stars Deuce Carter and Oscar Flint were also reassigned to the new team.

Whenever this trio went on mission, a camera crew would follow them around. These missions, which were the first missions ever broadcast across the galaxy, ended up being some of the most famous Hero Factory missions ever.

After ten years, Carter and Flint had gone from being rookies to well respected veterans, but they were still being seen by the media as the “new guys.” The two Heroes felt they had better opportunities elsewhere, and they agreed with Fox to split up the team. Carter and Flint became the leaders of Nu 2 and Pi 3 Teams, respectively, and Fox was later approached again by Mr. Makuro to start Hero Recon Team.

Rebooted[]

Mr. Makuro waited a couple more decades to try the Alpha Team concept again. Using the same formula as before, he chose veteran Hero Kirk Thresher and rookies Preston Stormer and Von Ness to form the rebooted Alpha Team.

Following the successful capture of several major villains in Makuhero City, the trio quickly became superstars. They were sent to nearby New Stellac City for a press conference, which was interrupted part way through when they were called to stop a burglary in progress. While en route to the crime scene, they encountered a much more pressing issue: a hulking drone packing some serious firepower. The Heroes called another team to deal with the burglary while they took on the drone. While fighting the drone, Thresher was badly injured and Von Ness fled in the team’s drop ship, leaving Stormer to take down the drone by himself. Although Stormer saved the day, his accomplishment was completely overshadowed by Von Ness’s betrayal.

After Thresher was repaired, Mr. Makuro summoned him and Stormer to his office. “I’m sure you’ve seen the negative press coverage you’ve received since your last mission.”

“Yeah, I don’t understand,” said Stormer. “If it weren’t for me, New Stellac City would be a pile of rubble right now.”

“There’s only one way I can think of to save your reputation. I’m going to have to disband—”

“Wait, wait, hang on,” blurted Thresher. “I can fix this. Just give me some time; I’m going to find and recruit someone who actually belongs on the team.”

Thresher spent the next few months researching every active Hero and interviewing several of them. He settled on Francis Stealth, a solo Hero who was stationed on Tansari VI and boasted one of the highest villain-catching rates in all of Hero Factory.

With the addition of Stealth, Alpha Team was going on missions for the first time since the Von Ness incident. The new roster proved itself when they stopped a band of space pirates roaming Galactic Sector 4, mostly thanks to Stealth’s fighting prowess. Then, they went to the Fabulox system and shut down most of the criminal hideouts there.

While Mr. Makuro was on vacation, Hero Factory Management decided to assign two new rookies to Alpha Team, Drew Swift and Mike Power. The expanded team’s first assignment was to track down Zapsta on the mining planet Tallos V. They spent a month trying to track him down, but they couldn’t find any leads to follow. But one day, they received a report of a hijacked train that was transporting a shipment of quaza and other valuable minerals. When Alpha Team arrived on the scene, they found that Zapsta was the hijacker and that he had many X-Series Flamethrower Robots with him. After a protracted fight, Zapsta was cuffed and the train was stopped. Their victory came at a heavy price, though. Thresher was dead, and Swift and Power were both missing.

After Stormer and Stealth, the two surviving Heroes, got back to Makuhero City, they were joined by Emily Wise, formerly of Delta 9 Team. They wanted to set off on a mission to look for Mr. Makuro, as no one had heard from him in several months, but Hero Factory Management forbade them from doing so. However, an anonymous Hero Recon Team agent met with Alpha Team and revealed that they had been conducting their own investigation into Mr. Makuro’s whereabouts.

After the Recon Team agent shared the results of his investigation, Alpha Team set off for the jungle planet Videon. Another Hero, Lucas Valor, was sent to stop them, but he ended up working with them instead. Together, the four Heroes went to an abandoned coal mine, where they caught three villains and rescued Mr. Makuro.

Upon returning to Makuhero City, Mr. Makuro created the Hall of Valor to recognize the bravest Heroes. At the beginning of a long ceremony, he gave the first four medals to Stormer, Wise, Stealth, and Valor. Following that, the Heroes held a long press conference, with Valor explaining many times that he was not joining Alpha Team.

With a solid lineup established once again, Alpha Team continued to go on missions. However, there was a lot of friction between Stealth and Stormer, as they both thought they should be the team leader. Their heated arguments and disagreement over what needed be done in certain situations resulted in an unusually high percentage of failed missions. Eventually, Wise had to step in, and she suggested that they ask Mr. Makuro to settle the issue. The two scheduled a meeting with Mr. Makuro and went to his office to talk with him.

“I’ve been hearing all about the situation between you two,” began Makuro, “and how it’s affected your mission performance. I hope you both realize that everyone in the galaxy looks up to you to set an example, and that when things like this happen, it tarnishes the reputation of the entire Hero Factory.”

“Yes, we understand. We need you to decide which of us will be the official leader of Alpha Team,” said Stormer.

Mr. Makuro said nothing for several seconds as he made his decision. Finally, he said, “Preston Stormer, from the moment you received your first core charge, I knew you were destined to become a great leader. I cannot think of anyone in Hero Factory who would be better suited for the role of Alpha Leader than you.”

“Really?” interjected Stealth. “You don’t think I have what it takes to be a leader?”

“I never said that, did I? Francis Stealth, you are on Alpha Team for a reason. You are the best fighter I know, and you are relentless in the pursuit of justice. However, if you want to be a successful Hero, you must understand your role in the team. Any team that cannot work together will fall apart.”

Stealth had no choice but to accept Stormer’s leadership of Alpha Team. However, the rivalry between the two continued for the next ten years, albeit to a much smaller extent.

New Recruits[]

After several years of leading Alpha Team, Stormer had shed his reputation of being a hotshot, and he was given permission to choose another Hero to recruit to his team. When Dunkan Bulk returned from Tavus Station for a physical examination, Stormer took the opportunity to add some more muscle to the team. Wise left a few months later, as she felt Alpha Team had turned into a big boys’ club.

The most well remembered mission during the Stormer/Stealth/Bulk era took place in their home town of Makuhero City. Several villains (working for Von Nebula, but no one knew that at the time) hijacked a space freighter and sent it down on a collision course for the Hero Factory Assembly Tower. Alpha Team had less than an hour to prevent the collision. First, they used their drop ship to blast a small hole in the top of the freighter. Then, they set the drop ship to autopilot and hopped out, using the hole they blasted to get inside the freighter. With their fighting prowess, the three Heroes managed to wrest control of the freighter from the hijackers. While Stormer piloted the freighter to crash land into the ocean next to Makuhero City, Stealth and Bulk rounded up and caught all of the villains on board.

No direct attempt to destroy the Assembly Tower has been made since.

In 1996, Stealth was secretly recruited to Hero Recon Team and disappeared without a trace. As soon as he noticed Stealth was gone, Stormer went to talk with Mr. Makuro.

“I don’t know where Stealth is,” said Mr. Makuro, “but I can assure you that you won’t see him again for a long, long time, if ever.”

“So you’re saying I’m going to have to look for a new member to replace him on Alpha Team,” said Stormer.

“No. I have already selected a new member to join you. He’s sitting right there in the corner.”

Stormer saw him sitting there when he entered the room, but he wasn’t really paying attention at first. After focusing on the new member for a few seconds, Stormer’s eyes darted back to Mr. Makuro. “You picked Jimi Stringer? Is this some sort of joke? There’s a reason he’s never been able to join a team. He’s too casual, and he doesn’t take his job seriously.”

Stringer continued sitting in the corner, playing his bass guitar, and being seemingly unaware that he was in the same room as Mr. Makuro and Preston Stormer.

“That’s where you come in, Stormer,” said Mr. Makuro. “With your leadership skills, I know you have what it takes to train a rookie like Stringer.”

Standing directly in front of Stringer, Stormer bent over and yelled, “On your feet, rookie!”

Immediately, Stringer jumped up out of his seat, with his bass still strapped around his shoulders.

“Mr. Makuro here thinks you deserve to be on Alpha Team,” Stormer continued, “but I’m not convinced. There is one thing you can do for me, though. Give me your guitar.”

“Um, it’s a bass,” Stringer corrected.

“I don’t care what it’s called. Just hand it over.”

Stringer slowly unstrapped his bass and let Stormer take it. He then watched in horror as Stormer gripped the bass by its neck and smashed it into the ground again and again.

Once Stringer’s bass was smashed beyond the point of recognizability, Stormer began to lecture the rookie. “Music. Some robots call it a hobby. Others even call it a career. But here at Hero Factory, music is nothing but a distraction. As long as you’re on my team, your focus will be on one thing and one thing only: fighting evil wherever it may be found. You may hate me now, but in ten years, you will thank me for making you into one of Hero Factory’s top Heroes. Now, report to the VR Training Sphere. I want to evaluate your performance before we go on any real missions.”

And thus, the most famous and iconic Alpha Team lineup was born, consisting of Preston Stormer, Dunkan Bulk, and Jimi Stringer. It wasn’t an easy transition, however, as Stringer’s lack of experience fighting villains caused the team to fail its next mission.

Almaak IV Disappearance[]

The Trans-Sector Parliament, a government spanning multiple systems and based on Almaak V, reported that neighboring planet Almaak IV was gone. They claimed that the planet was destroyed by a new superweapon developed in the Prima Giedi system, which seceded from the Trans-Sector Parliament a few years earlier. Hero Factory suspected something fishy was going on, so Alpha Team was sent to the Almaak system to investigate. They split up to look for clues, and Stringer went to the observatory on Almaak V. While looking in the telescope (which the astronomers were forbidden by the government to use), Stringer found that Sukun, the moon of Almaak IV, was still in its normal position.

Once Stringer told Stormer what he learned, the team went to Sukun in their drop ship. They still couldn’t see Almaak IV, but they detected many satellites all going in circles around Almaak IV. Stringer deduced that the satellites were part of a holographic projection system that was hiding the planet. Sure enough, as Alpha Team started shutting down the satellites, the planet reappeared. Since the government’s story was clearly false, the team had to uncover the truth behind the incident. However, the Trans-Sector Parliament had covered up their tracks pretty well, and the Heroes couldn’t find any sources to prove who was responsible and what their motivation was.

A few days later, a fleet of freshly built warships arrived in the Almaak system. Stormer went to the prime minister of the Trans-Sector Parliament and asked him what the deal was. After being pressed for an answer, he finally admitted the truth. They made the holographic projection system so they could blame Prima Giedi for something and spark a war with them. Alpha Team then arrested the prime minister and other government officials who were identified as being part of the plot. They stayed for a while longer to ensure political stability in the Almaak system, then they returned to Makuhero City.

More Famous Missions[]

Around the turn of the millennium, a civil war was raging in the Tsadi system between the ruling oligarchs and a group of oppressed workers led by Seyann. Stormer led an operation with his team and a few other Hero Teams to distribute Hero Factory-built weapons to the revolutionaries. This is considered a primary factor in the defeat of the oligarchy.

Several years later, Alpha Team was in Antropolis. A time bomb was reported in the Antropolis Spaceport, and the local Hero Team was already busy with another mission. Stormer and his team had to fight their way through the gridlocked traffic of Antropolis in a race against time to get to the bomb before it detonated. When they finally got there, Bulk with his extensive knowledge of explosives was able to disarm the bomb only a few seconds before it was timed to detonate.

When Kappa 5 Team, then led by Smith Matrix, discovered a suspicious factory producing an army of “Tiger Ant” robots, Alpha Team was sent to Sorntrez VII to protect it from a possible attack. Sure enough, a fleet of transport ships arrived in orbit of Sorntrez VII a few days later. These ships dropped pods collectively containing thousands of Tiger Ants onto the streets of Zallen, the planet’s capital city. And the mastermind behind the attack, Cornelius Zo, was with them. Thankfully, Alpha Team had already been coming up with an innovative counterattack. Bulk had been working on a compact tank he called the Crusher, and he was excited to put it into use. Most of the Tiger Ants fled on sight of the Crusher; the ones who didn’t were easily dispatched by the Crusher’s intense firepower. Although Zallen was saved, Cornelius Zo escaped again and remained at large.

Rise of the Rookies and the Ordeal of Fire[]

2010 was an exciting year for Hero Factory: there were rumors of an upcoming “Upgrade” and Hero Factory had signed a deal with Earth-based toy company LEGO to license a line of buildable action figures. To test some of the improved technology that was coming in the 2.0 Upgrade, three rookies were built: Mark Surge, Natalie Breez, and William Furno. After passing their initial evaluation, they were all assigned to Alpha Team, despite Stormer’s protests. The team was then sent to faraway Merak IX to put the rookies through their mission trial.

While guarding a shipment of C-4000 explosives on Merak IX, Alpha Team was attacked by XPlode and Rotor. The Heroes successfully defended the shipment, but both villains got away. The team followed the villains to the neighboring Lemus system, but by the time they reached the Lemus system, they lost track of XPlode and his accomplice. Shortly later, the Heroes received an emergency call from the Lemus II explosives plant, where the villains they were tracking just happened to be. When Stormer and the rookies reached the explosives plant, XPlode and Rotor had already plundered most of the explosives. During the battle, Furno made up for his failure in his previous mission and cuffed Rotor. They considered it a win, even though XPlode escaped again.

The rookies’ training was intended to be continued in Mekron City, but first they needed to drop Rotor off at Penitentiary 1331, which was under construction at the time they left but was expected to be finished by the time they arrived. However, a villain known as Corroder began attacking the prison and harassing the workers, greatly delaying construction. The Heroes weren’t able to catch Corroder, but they chased him away, allowing construction to resume.

When Alpha Team reached Mekron City, they found that the whole city was on lockdown. When they went inside to investigate, they met Drax, the police chief of Mekron City, and found he had been infected with nanobots. Then, Meltdown stopped by, infected Stormer, and left. Furno took Stormer and Drax back to Makuhero City for treatment, while Bulk, Stringer, Surge, and Breez went to Lunar Tratix to find the antidote for the nanobots. After arriving at Makuhero City, Stormer was taken over by the nanobots just as Drax had been, and he went on a rampage around the city. One fight any many destroyed billboards later, Furno captured Stormer and brought him back to the Hero Factory Assembly Tower to receive the antidote.

More than just an attempt to destroy Stormer, the nanobot incident also served as a distraction to allow Von Nebula and his gang to raid the Palomino Diamond Vault in the Deltari system. The public was becoming increasingly frustrated with Alpha Team’s inability to apprehend these dangerous villains. There was still a shot at catching them, however, as Hero Recon Team found that their next target was New Stellac City. In the famous battle that followed, all of Von Nebula’s villains were captured, and Von Nebula himself was destroyed by being sucked into his own black hole staff.

A couple months later, Tanker Station 22 was attacked by the Fire Villains, a group of former mining robots from Tallos V who were literally addicted to energy. Alpha Team was sent to combat them, but there was no contest. The Heroes were easily defeated by Fire Lord and his gang. They may have died there as well if it weren’t for Surge creating a distraction that allowed the others to escape.

Back at the Hero Factory, Stormer persuaded Mr. Makuro to allow his team to go through the as-yet untested Upgrade process. After some time in the Training Sphere to get accustomed to their new bodies, the Heroes went back to Tanker Station 22. Julius Nex and Nathan Evo, the 2.0 prototype Heroes, came with just in case they needed some extra firepower. This time, they beat the Fire Villains and rescued their teammate Surge.

During the post-mission press conference, Nex and Evo both expressed interest in actually becoming members of Alpha Team, but Stormer stated, “We are not accepting applications at this time.”
