Jimi Stringer is the second in command of Alpha Team, the top team in Hero Factory.

Biography

Rookie

The last Hero constructed in the year of 1995, Stringer passed the stringent rookie training program with an above-average score. In the brief time he had between training missions and tests, he discovered that his main interest was music. As soon as he was able to, he went to a music store and got himself a bass guitar. He spent most of his spare time playing his bass and coming up with new, groovy bass riffs. Because of this, all of the team leaders believed Stringer was too laid back for the serious business of rescuing people and defeating villains.

This meant that pretty much all of his time was spare. After figuring out how to modify his shockwave weapon into an amplifier for his bass guitar, he played at several concerts with a local band called Optimus. From time to time, he would also be assigned small missions in Makuhero City.

An unexpected surprise came for him when he was invited to Mr. Makuro’s office one day. Stringer went with his bass strapped around his shoulders.

“You probably aren’t aware of this, but Francis Stealth left Alpha Team recently,” said Mr. Makuro. “Since every Hero Team needs at least three Heroes, I have assigned you to Alpha Team to replace him.”

Excited for a second, Stringer then realized what it meant to be on Alpha Team. “Don’t you know how Stormer treats rookies like me? He’s going to kill me!”

“He’s not going to kill you. The reason I’m doing this is because you need a mentor who can push you and help you reach your potential. Go ahead and take a seat while we wait for Stormer to come over.”

There was a comfy-looking chair in the corner of the room that Stringer sat down in. While he waited, he started playing his bass, practicing for the next Optimus concert. A few minutes later, he heard someone entering the room, but he continued playing. Even as that someone talked with Mr. Makuro, Stringer concentrated on his bass playing.

It was like he was in a trance, which was only broken when a voice yelled right in front of him, “On your feet, rookie!”

Immediately, Stringer jumped up out of his seat, with his bass still strapped around his shoulders. It was Preston Stormer, his new team leader.

“Mr. Makuro here thinks you deserve to be on Alpha Team,” said Stormer, “but I’m not convinced. There is one thing you can do for me, though. Give me your guitar.”

“Um, it’s a bass,” Stringer corrected.

“I don’t care what it’s called. Just hand it over.”

Stringer slowly unstrapped his bass and let Stormer take it. He then watched in horror as Stormer gripped the bass by its neck and smashed it into the ground again and again.

Once Stringer’s bass was smashed beyond the point of recognizability, Stormer began to lecture the rookie. “Music. Some robots call it a hobby. Others even call it a career. But here at Hero Factory, music is nothing but a distraction. As long as you’re on my team, your focus will be on one thing and one thing only: fighting evil wherever it may be found. You may hate me now, but in ten years, you will thank me for making you into one of Hero Factory’s top Heroes. Now, report to the VR Training Sphere. I want to evaluate your performance before we go on any real missions.”

And thus, the most famous and iconic Alpha Team lineup was born, consisting of Preston Stormer, Dunkan Bulk, and Jimi Stringer.

On Stringer’s first mission with Alpha Team, his serious lack of combat skills (especially compared to Stealth, the one he replaced) allowed the gang of villains they were fighting to get away. After the mission, Stormer took his frustration out on Stringer.

“You’re an embarrassment to Hero Factory, you know that?”

Stringer bowed his head. “Yes, Alpha Leader. I know.”

“What are you going to do once you’ve had some time to think about what you did wrong on that mission?”

“I’m going to go back out there, and I’m going to find and catch those villains that I let escape.”

“Wrong. If you tried to fight a villain on your own, you’d be vaporized. We are going to find and catch those villains.”

For the next couple days, Stringer practiced his aim in the Training Sphere. Once Stormer and Bulk decided he was ready, they went back out onto the streets of Makuhero City to look for the villains that they couldn’t catch before. During their rematch, the Heroes backed the villains into a corner, forcing them to surrender.

After catching the villains, Alpha Team made their first public appearance since Stealth left the team. A few people recognized Stringer as the bassist from Optimus, but besides that, he was completely unknown.

One of the news reporters asked Stormer, “Given your experience with rookies in the past, how has it been working with Stringer?”

“It’s been pretty terrible. He has no idea what he’s doing. But to his credit, at least he hasn’t deserted the team by now like Von Ness did,” said Stormer.

Rise to Fame

While Optimus scrambled to find a new bass player, Stringer went with Stormer and Bulk to the Almaak system to investigate the disappearance of Almaak IV. The Heroes immediately suspected foul play, since there were no signs of any natural phenomena that could account for the incident. At first, they couldn’t find any clues, but Stringer went to the observatory on Almaak V to get a closer look.

“I’m here to investigate the disappearance of Almaak IV,” said Stringer.

“The government told us the planet was destroyed by a new weapon developed in the Prima Giedi system,” said one of the astronomers. “They have forbidden us from looking around where the planet’s orbit was.”

“Well, that doesn’t mean I’m forbidden.”

The astronomers showed Stringer how to use the telescope and provided him with the information about Almaak IV’s orbit. After several hours of observation, Stringer noticed a small rock, only a few miles across, near where Almaak IV was supposed to be.

“That could be Sukun, the planet’s moon, but if the planet was destroyed, the moon wouldn’t stay in its orbit.”

“Then that must mean the planet is being hidden somehow,” concluded Stringer.

After Stringer left the observatory, he went to Stormer and told him what he learned. The team went to Sukun in their drop ship. They still couldn’t see Almaak IV, but they detected many satellites all going in circles around Almaak IV. Stringer deduced that the satellites were part of a holographic projection system that was hiding the planet. Sure enough, as Alpha Team started shutting down the satellites, the planet reappeared. After arresting the government officials who were responsible for the hoax, the team remained for a while to ensure political stability in the Almaak system.

By the turn of the 21st century, Stringer was second in command of Alpha Team, and he continued to participate in many famous missions with Stormer and Bulk, like the operation to smuggle weapons to the freedom fighters during the civil war on Tsadi VI, and the time they defused a bomb in the Antropolis Spaceport with five seconds to go.

Powers and Equipment

Stringer has always been equipped with some form of his iconic Sonic Boom Weapon. It has the ability to fire powerful sound waves in a specific direction. It is also arm-mounted, allowing for the use of both hands during combat.

The Sonic Boom Weapon also has a ¼ inch audio jack. Plugging an instrument cable into this jack switches the weapon into a low power mode, making it suitable for use as a bass guitar amplifier.
